Day of Europe 2019

“Europe will not be made at one go, nor in an overall construction; it will be made through concrete achievements that create real solidarity ”Robert Schuman stated prophetically. His vision was to create a European institution that would manage coal and steel production. A treaty creating such a body was signed a few months later.

Indeed, in a Declaration on 9 May 1950 Paul Schuman, the Foreign Minister of France launched the ‘Schuman Plan’ proposing a supranational Community for coal and steel, based on a new European legal order and the idea of political and economic cooperation between the European countries that would eliminate anyappetite for war between Europe’s nations. In 1951 the European Coal and Steel Community was created and later on, in 1956 the European Economic Community, and in 1993 the European Union as we know it today.

Europeans can celebrate Europe Day at the European institutions in Brussels with the annual Open Day on 4 May 2019 from 10.00 to 18.00.

This year the Open Day is about choosing our future. The European elections on 23-26 May 2019 are our chance to participate actively in what affects our everyday life.
